Root Canal
Explained

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure that aims to save a severely damaged or infected tooth.During a root canal, the dentist removes the infected or inflamed pulp from the tooth’s root canal system.

The root canal is then cleaned, disinfected, and filled with a biocompatible material to prevent future infection and restore the tooth’s functionality. After the root canal, a dental crown or filling

is usually placed on the treated tooth to provide strength and protection. Root canal treatment can alleviate pain, save the natural tooth, and prevent the need for extraction.

What Exactly Is
Root Canal Procedures?

A root canal procedure, also known as endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure performed to save a tooth that is severely damaged or infected. Here is a breakdown of the root canal procedure:

1. Examination and Diagnosis:
Before the root canal procedure, the dentist will conduct a thorough examination, which may include dental X-rays, to assess the condition of the tooth and determine if a root canal is necessary. They will evaluate the extent of the damage or infection and develop a treatment plan.

2. Anesthesia:
To ensure your comfort during the procedure, the dentist will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area around the affected tooth. In some cases, general anesthesia or sedation may be used, especially for complex cases or if you have dental anxiety.

3. Accessing the Tooth:
Once the area is numb, the dentist will isolate the tooth using a dental dam, a thin sheet of rubber that keeps the tooth clean and dry during the procedure. They will then create a small access hole in the tooth, typically through the top surface or back of the tooth.

4. Removal of Infected or Damaged Pulp:
Using specialized instruments, the dentist will carefully remove the infected or damaged pulp tissue from the inside of the tooth and its root canals. The root canals are cleaned and shaped to remove any remaining debris or bacteria.

5. Disinfection and Filling: After the canals are cleaned, the dentist will disinfect them using an antimicrobial solution to eliminate bacteria and prevent further infection. The canals are then filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, which seals the canals to prevent reinfection.

6. Restoration of the Tooth: After the root canal is completed, the tooth may require additional restoration. In most cases, a dental crown is placed over the treated tooth to provide strength, protection, and restore its natural appearance. The crown is custom-made to match the shape and color of your natural teeth.

7. Follow-Up and Aftercare: Following the root canal procedure, the dentist will provide specific instructions for post-treatment care. This may include taking prescribed medications, practicing good oral hygiene, and scheduling follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process.

It’s important to note that the root canal procedure may span over one or more dental visits, depending on the complexity of the case and the individual’s oral health condition. The dentist will tailor the procedure to your specific needs and take appropriate measures to ensure your comfort and successful outcome.
