TOOTH EXTRACTIONS
Explained

Tooth extraction is a dental procedure that involves the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. It is typically performed for various reasons, including severe decay, infection, overcrowding, or impacted wisdom teeth.

In some cases, a missing tooth may be replaced with a dental implant, bridge, or denture to restore functionality and aesthetics.

It is important to follow the dentist’s recommendations for aftercare and schedule follow-up visits to monitor healing and ensure optimal oral health.

What Exactly Is
Tooth Extractions Procedures

Tooth extraction is a dental procedure in which a tooth is removed from its socket in the jawbone. The procedure typically involves the following steps:

1. Examination and Evaluation:
Before the tooth extraction, the dentist will conduct a thorough examination, which may include dental X-rays, to assess the tooth and surrounding structures. They will evaluate the condition of the tooth, its position, and the presence of any potential complications.

2. Anesthesia:
To ensure your comfort during the procedure, the dentist will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth being extracted. In some cases, general anesthesia or sedation may be used, especially for complex extractions or if you have dental anxiety.

3. Tooth Loosening:
Once the area is numb, the dentist will use specialized instruments, such as an elevator or forceps, to gently loosen the tooth within its socket. They will apply controlled pressure to expand the socket and separate the tooth from the periodontal ligament that holds it in place.

4. Tooth Extraction:
Once the tooth is adequately loosened, the dentist will carefully remove it from the socket. The dentist may use forceps to grasp the tooth and gently wiggle it back and forth until it detaches completely. In some cases, a surgical extraction may be necessary, which involves making an incision in the gum tissue or removing bone around the tooth to access and extract it.

5. Socket Cleaning and Stitches (if required): After the tooth extraction, the dentist will clean the extraction site to remove any debris or infected tissue. In some cases, stitches may be needed to close the wound. Dissolvable stitches may be used, eliminating the need for their removal.

6. Post-Extraction Care: The dentist will provide you with specific post-extraction instructions to promote healing and minimize discomfort. This may include applying a gauze pad to control bleeding, avoiding certain foods and activities, taking prescribed pain medications or antibiotics, and maintaining proper oral hygiene.

7. Follow-Up: It is important to attend any scheduled follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process and ensure optimal recovery. The dentist will evaluate the extraction site and address any concerns or complications that may arise.

It’s important to note that the tooth extraction procedure may vary depending on the complexity of the case, the location of the tooth, and the individual’s oral health condition. The dentist will tailor the procedure to your specific needs and take appropriate measures to ensure your comfort and safety throughout the process.
